PhysioCall Achievements

We don't talk about them alot in clinic but there are plenty of amazing people in Gladstone who get physio treatment and achieve amazing things.

- I just want to briefly say its been a long year of sport and achievements for many of you here at PhysioCall and even though I may not have mentioned you here in this post... I'm so proud of all the humans that have come in with a goal and did everything they can to reach it.
Whether you got there or not, the important thing is you applied focus, effort, discipline and you truly inspire me to work harder for you to help you get there.

Ok here's a couple of examples of this weeks legends.

1. Grace is a dedicated acro gymnast and swimmer who recently had an injury that could easily have put into a cast or even surgery.

If tenacious was a human Grace would be living proof of the word. Not phased by pain, or the inability to walk without a crutch. A certain break from sport would normally be the recipe for healing success.

When I asked grace what her highest values were at the time of injury it was swimming meets and end of year displays in gymnastics and wanting to be able to perform and participate and do her best in them.

Not only has Grace shown how amazing the human body is at healing itself... particularly when you remove the stress (root cause) but she has also been rewarded by her efforts.

Part of Graces rehab and recovery was to still compete at the swim meets, but only in limited events, and at scaled effort levels (around 75%). 2 weeks in a row she broke her PB's (personal bests) and won medal and awards.

Grace is well on track to compete display this weekend. Good luck with the display.

2. Congratulations Emma #heroofharveybar

Emma is the birthchild of a rock and a hardplace... she is one tough cookie and has endurance and fuel to burn when it comes to long distant events. I'm pretty sure she thinks a rest day involves doing things.

Emma is a long time moving enthusiast in the arts of running, swimming, cycling, and a fan of our style of physio here at PhysioCall.com.au. You name it Emma has probably done an event or plans to be in one that pushes her physical capabilities and we love being there in support.

Working through the list of achievements that Emma has completed certainly brings tears to my eyes and probably hers whilst keeping we deep tissue her body to keep it in top shape.

Last weekend's Harvey Bay 100 is no exception, I am very proud to announce that she has since conquered the tough endurance race by giving it another go.

Well done and thank you including us in another great goal setting experience.

What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Why Do I Need It?

For anyone in Gladstone TRY MLD with Chris at 25% off (for the next 2 weeks) if you call the clinic use the coupon word: MLD 25% Off

What Is MLD and Why Do I Need It?

Manual lymphatic drainage refers to the rhythmical massage specially targeting the lymphatic system, the body’s natural waste disposal system. It helps improve the efficient way your lymphatic and circulatory systems work by lessening the volume of fluid retained in the body and the pressure, reducing the risk of blocked circulation. In turn, it allows the circulatory system to quickly remove the retained fluids and waste build-ups from the body.

There are plenty of reasons to enjoy manual lymphatic drainage, starting with its benefits to people with certain condition and the negative impact of lymph blockage.

Benefits

Manual lymphatic drainage proves helpful in increasing the positive effects of the treatment for a wide range of conditions and other health issues such as the following:

  • Post-surgery recovery such as after mastectomy or breast cancer treatment
  • Sinusitis
  • Skin disorders such as eczema, acne and psoriasis
  • Lymphedema
  • Constipation
  • Rheumatism and arthritis
  • Swollen arms or legs due to fluid retention
  • Breast tenderness and congestion
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Lupus and fibromyalgia
  • Hormonal and emotional imbalances
  • Cellulite fat accumulation
  • Recurrent infections such as flue, colds, yeast infections and tonsillitis
  • Scar tissue, which can be softened with better lymph flow after a lymphatic massage
  • Relaxation massage
  • Neurological disorders such as headaches, stroke, migraines, and M.S.
  • Lymphatic system stimulation and detoxing
  • Fatigue due to lack of exercise, traveling or poor diet

What Happens If There’s Lymph Blockage?

Every time the lymphatic system gets clogged and blocked, it stops the system from performing its function of fighting pathogens, causing fluid to become stagnant and the immune system to stop working. Stagnant lymph can lead to infection and inflammation, aside from having an impaired immune system and swelling in some parts of the body. If this continues, without proper manual lymphatic drainage, this could worsen and cause lymphedema. If lymphedema remains untreated, it could lead to painful and serious issues such as cellulitis.

Stagnant lymph is partly caused by an unhealthy diet and lack of sleep because it is during a good night’s sleep that both the lymphatic and nervous systems do their work in removing waste build-up and cleaning the body. A sleep-deprived body may hamper these cleaning processes, causing swelling. Poor diet also causes swollen hands, or even a bigger body part, such as the lower or upper torso or even the full torso, if proper lymphatic massage is not performed.

Try MLD with Chris coupon word: MLD 25% Off

With proper manual lymphatic drainage, the lymph gets moved along and the lymph nodes get stimulated to effectively clean the body. Some essential oils may be used during the massage to relieve lymphedema and lymphatic stagnancy. Often, clients get out of the massage with less swelling, reduced bloating, less joint swelling, and decreased pain, giving them the relief that they have long been looking for.

A lymphatic massage is done slowly and lightly, helping clients fall asleep. This is best performed in three sessions, scheduled close together such as once a week or after three days within each other. But you’d have to let go of remedial massage or deep tissue massage while having lymphatic drainage to avoid interrupting the function of the lymphatic system.

"If you were to start smoking at the age of 35, what brand of cigarettes would you start smoking?" - Josh

"If you were to start smoking at the age of 35, what brand of cigarettes would you start smoking?" - Josh

That's what I asked my housemates (who all smoke) and a bunch of other people who also use cigarettes.

Who knew it would evoke so much emotion?

Have you ever been told you are making a dumb choice? That you are making a mistake? That's what I was told by 100% of people who smoke cigarettes and about 80% of people don't.

Of the 20% of non-smokers who weren't discouraging me to smoke, they were instead supportive of my adult decision.

- Cigarettes are legal, so is beer for anyone in Australia aged 18yrs and older. Coffee, chocolate, staying up late is not illegal for anyone of any age, however.

What would do if everyone in your world smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol...would you be taking part and be like the group OR would you say NO THANK YOU and do your own thing?

I feel like I've been on the outside of many groups, my whole life, not wanting to partake because I thought I understood things by learning from others and their choices.

I never understood addiction, it doesn't make sense to me.
Perceivably bad things for one's health (products), addictive behaviours and habits, to me seem like intentional choices...

As a kid, I knew I didn't need to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol or take drugs to know they weren't for me. I felt I was able to learn that lesson from others.

Why did people decide to do these things, if they knew it was harming them?

I am not interested in smoking, I never have been my whole life. I had asthma as a kid. I know what it's like to be out of breath... why would I consciously cause myself to be out of breath when I already struggled with it?

Mentor Question:
Who am I to say that smoking is NOT good for me?

Allegory:
There was a grandson who's grandad told him that smoking cigarettes was healthy for you, in fact, it was the magic pill that kept you alive.
- it fights sickness
- it fights illness
- it keeps you happy

The grandson now has this belief that if he was going to be as cool and as awesome as his grandad that he needs to smoke too.

A belief and act in which the grandfather has no problem with, because the grandfather has been smoking since he was a kid and he's healthy and fit and everytime he goes to the doctors he's been told he's ok.

So the grandson watches his grandfather live to 100 years old but his grandma (who doesn't like smoking, who doesn't enjoy smoking, who has a very strong belief about it and has always felt the grandfather shouldn't be smoking) is angered, emotional and upset just by the thought of the grandfather smoking, that it causes her to feel anguished.

The grandson watches the granddad live to 100 and the grandma, die alot earlier than 100 years old. On some level there is a belief there that the grandson has that "smoking is good for you", given to him by an authority and someone he cares about. The proof is that his grandfather lived longer than his grandmother (someone who didn't smoke), that smoking is good for him.

It's now very hard for the grandson to break any belief that smoking IS NOT good for him. In his mind, it's good for him. It will help him live longer.

Answer: Who am I to question somebodies belief and who I am to tell them if they are right or if they are wrong?

This is an introduction to the dichotomy of life.
The right and the wrong.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dichotomy

A dichotomy /daɪˈkɒtəmi/ is a partition of a whole (or a set) into two parts (subsets). In other words, this couple of parts must be jointly exhaustive: everything must belong to one part or the other, and
mutually exclusive: nothing can belong simultaneously to both parts.

E.g
- black and white
- up and down
- left and right
- right and wrong

What's your perspective on something that causes you emotion?

My understanding is that if you react to something (anything) you have a one-sided perspective. What happens if you consciously choose to understand the other side of your perspective? What happens to your life? What happens to your decisions? Your level of understanding? Your appreciation and gratitude levels for someone else's perspectives?

I didn't talk about this is in the video but I've had a one-sided perspective of cigarettes and alcohol my who life, and now I'm challenging the belief. Right or wrong, I'll have a new perspective.

I always thought I could never be a rock star because I didn't drink or smoke... I've always wanted to be a rockstar. I practised the guitar for 10+ years. I wrote and recorded songs and yet I never became a rockstar.

Is it intentional that I am not a rockstar or just causal effect of my own limiting beliefs/perspectives?

According to Liam Gallagher from Oasis
"It's a crazy situation, but all I need are cigarettes and alcohol."

Lessons From Addiction Phase 3

Currently experiencing emotional eating. Cannot eat enough. I'm rewarding myself with food.

Also testing things at the same time as I eat foods and marking off what I know consciously makes me feel inflamed, stressed, tired, fatigued. There are 500+ items on the list that I will test when I finish this phase to gain objective data to help me avoid those things in the future.

Addiction presents with many signs and symptoms:
- I find myself defending my addiction sometimes when I talk about having a break from the thing that might be hurting me
- symptoms include headache, migranes, angry when I have a break from it

Non-negotiables for someone who is ill, sick and diseased:

1) Smoking
2) Alcohol
3) Coffee
4) Sugar
5) Dairy
6) Staying up late (not getting enough sleep)

Being aware of your beliefs, behaviours, habits, addictions, past experiences, and fears help with your conscious choices and discipline as an adult.

Next phase: What does the best version of yourself look like?

Hope
Confidence
Knowing... is not doing.
You need to DO.

If you continue to dream through life and do the same things over and over, expecting a different result...you have to wake and take responsibility at some point and DO something different.

Be a scientist - challenge your beliefs.

Working on challenging my beliefs in this Phase 3 around:
- Alcohol
- Cigarettes
- Coffee

Remedial Massage Therapist (with HiCaps) VS Qualified Beauty Massage Therapist (no HiCaps)

A Remedial Massage Therapist (Chris) is a practitioner who deals with specific issues or dysfunctions, and who will formulate a plan especially for you and your health concerns  (as opposed to a massage therapist, who may give you a massage to relax and rejuvenate your tired muscles and mind). They will work with you by taking a precise history and performing a thorough assessment and evaluation. There will be notes and plans, as with what you’d see with any practitioner dealing with the treatment of a health concern. If you have particular muscle tension or chronic pain a remedial massage may be for you.

Your remedial massage therapist works to find the actual cause of your discomfort, and their therapy aims to eliminate the root cause, not just the symptoms. They will use a series of manual manipulation that may or may not be firm and forceful. Deep tissue massage itself is not remedial massage, but remedial massage might involve deep tissue massage. It may also involve passive stretching.

Your remedial massage therapist will assess where you need treatment and what may be causing your pain. They’ll perform some tests to see exactly which muscles are giving you trouble and will tailor a treatment plan to suit. The treatment itself may involve deep tissue work for short periods of time, but the results are definitely worth it!

Chris

Your remedial massage therapist can work with you to treat some of the more common pain-causing conditions:

  • Cramps
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Sciatica
  • Stiff neck/back pain
  • Headaches
  • Musculoskeletal disorders
  • Sports injuries
  • Arthritis (including ankylosing spondylitis)/bursitis
  • Injuries resulting from a car accident
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Fibromyalgia

Chris has warm hands. He does relaxation massage and can get into knots. He is an amazing remedial massage therapists and he is starting to get busier each week. Chris is well experienced and should be able to help you relieve stress through different types of remedial massage therapy. You can ask him to make a plan for you on how to maintain and keep it away from pain and stress. He specializes in remedial massage, sports massage, relaxation massage, Swedish massage and Manual Lymphatic Drainage and can do all sorts of remedial massage therapy.

A Qualified Beauty Massage Therapist however, are experts in therapeutic facial and body care, with a strong understanding of key body systems, skin biology, anatomy and cosmetic chemistry. They provide non medical services and treatments. They do not diagnose conditions but they can address specific conditions such as acne or eczema. They can do microdermabrasion, hot rocks massage, relaxation massage, lash / brow treatments, and many more.

Gladstone Massage has Ally (a qualified beauty massage therapist NO HiCaps). At the moment, she only does Hot Rocks and Relaxation Massage at the clinic. We are hoping to offer more to our dearest clients. We are growing more and more and we are dedicated to helping more people. Her sessions are not claimable with private health.

Acupunture

a system of integrative medicine that involves pricking the skin or tissues with needles, used to alleviate pain and to treat various physical, mental, and emotional conditions. Originating in ancient China, acupuncture is now widely practiced in the West.

Contrary to popular Western belief, acupuncture is not just a system for inserting very thing needles into specific body locations to eliminate or reduce pain. It is a complete medical protocol focused on correcting imbalances of energy (known as qi or chi) in the body. In China , acupuncture has been used traditionally to prevent, diagnose and treat disease, as well as to improve general health.

In medical news today they explained how it works. Traditional Chinese medicine explains that health is the result of a harmonious balance of the complementary extremes of "yin" and "yang" of the life force known as "qi," pronounced "chi." Illness is said to be the consequence of an imbalance of the forces.

Qi is said to flow through meridians, or pathways, in the human body. These meridiens and energy flows are accessible through 350 acupuncture points in the body.

Inserting needles into these points with appropriate combinations is said to bring the energy flow back into proper balance.

There is no scientific proof that the meridians or acupuncture points exist, and it is hard to prove that they either do or do not, but numerous studies suggest that acupuncture works for some conditions.

Some experts have used neuroscience to explain acupuncture. Acupuncture points are seen as places where nerves, muscles, and connective tissue can be stimulated. The stimulation increases blood flow, while at the same time triggering the activity of the body's natural painkillers.

It is difficult to set up investigations using proper scientific controls, because of the invasive nature of acupuncture. In a clinical study, a control group would have to undergo sham treatment, or a placebo, for results to be compared with those of genuine acupuncture.

Some studies have concluded that acupuncture offers similar benefits to a patient as a placebo, but others have indicated that there are some real benefits.

It is believed to relieve but not limited to the conditions listed below;

  • low back pain
  • Menstrual cramps
  • neck pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • knee pain
  • Sprain
  • sciatica
  • Post-op nausea and vomiting
  • headache and migraine
  • Dental pain
  • Respiratory disorders, such as allergic rhinitis
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Gastric conditions like peptic ulcer
  • Morning sickness or labor pain
  • Stiff neck

According to Mayo Clinic Acupuncture points are situated in all areas of the body. Sometimes the appropriate points are far removed from the area of your pain. Your acupuncture practitioner will tell you the general site of the planned treatment and whether you need to remove any clothing. A gown, towel or sheet will be provided. You lie on a padded table for the treatment, which involves:

  • Needle insertion. Acupuncture needles are inserted to various depths at strategic points on your body. The needles are very thin, so insertion usually causes little discomfort. People often don't feel them inserted at all. Between five and 20 needles are used in a typical treatment. You may feel a mild aching sensation when a needle reaches the correct depth.
  • Needle manipulation. Your practitioner may gently move or twirl the needles after placement or apply heat or mild electrical pulses to the needles.
  • Needle removal. In most cases, the needles remain in place for 10 to 20 minutes while you lie still and relax. There is usually no discomfort when the needles are removed.

Many people think it helped them with their condition, its benefits is different to measure and there are evidence that acupuncture works best in people who expect it to work.

I am 35 years old and never have I ever ran 5 kilometres without stopping before.

My whole life I’ve had a physical appearance that resembles someone who looks lean and fit from the outside. Up until 2 years ago, that’s exactly how I would let others describe the body I had, sporty and healthy. But in the past 2 years...

Dry Needling

What is Dry needling, also known as trigger point dry needling and myofascial trigger point dry needling?

It is a treatment technique whereby a sterile dry, single-use, fine filament needle (acupuncture needle), one without medication or injection, is inserted into the muscle to assist with decreasing pain and improving function through the release of myofascial trigger points (knots in the muscle).

Dry needling is using the similar technique as acupuncture however they have different theory. Dry needling is focused on reducing pain and improving function through the release of myofascial trigger point also known as knots in the muscle. In medical term, dry needling is an invasive procedure where an acupuncture needle is inserted into the skin and muscle. It is aimed at myofascial trigger points which are hyper-irritable spots in skeletal muscle that are associated with a hypersensitive palpable nodule in a taut band.

What is Myofascia?

Fascia or myofascia is the dense, tough tissue which surrounds and covers all of your muscles and bones. This outer fascial covering is very strong and very flexible. In fact, it has a tensile strength of over 900Kg. Under a microscope, myofascia resembles a spider web or fish net. Myofascia can best be described as a complete body suit which runs from the top of your head down to the bottom of your toes. Damage to an area of fascia can effect other distant areas in your body even years later.

In the normal healthy state the fascia is relaxed and soft. It has the ability to stretch and move without restriction. In a healthy body fascia helps to maintain good posture, range of motion and flexibility. It also gives our bodies tremendous strength and helps us deal with stress and injuries.

When you experience physical trauma or inflammation the fascia loses its pliability. It can become tight, restricted and a source of tension throughout the rest of the body. Trauma such as a fall, whiplash, surgery or habitual poor posture has a cumulative effect over time and myofascial release or dry needling can help.

WHAT CAUSES MYOFASCIA PAIN?

  • Inflammation
  • Traumas, such as a fall or car accident
  • Work injuries
  • Poor posture
  • Lack of stretching such as prolonged sitting or standing
  • Emotional/psychological stress
  • Repetitive motions, such as factory work or keyboarding

MAINTAIN YOUR MYOFASCIAL BY HAVING IT RELEASED FREQUENTLY

When fascia is damaged or traumatized it can become too tight and cause a number of problems such as:

  • Headaches
  • Muscle pain and spasms
  • Chronic back and neck pain
  • Recurring injuries
  • Sciatica
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Sensations such as numbness and pins and needles
  • Poor posture and reduced flexibility

Myofascial release or dry needling is an effective hands-on therapy which can directly change and improve health of the fascia. The purpose of Myofascial Release is to break down scar tissue, relax the muscle and fascia and restore good posture, providing lasting and effective relief to the client. During a Dry Needling treatment, you may feel a slight sting as the needle is inserted and removed. However, this discomfort should last no longer than a second before settling.

Strapping Tape

Leading an active life means increasing your risk of getting injured, hence the need for a proactive measure to avoid injuries, such as using a strapping tape. Taping or strapping can prevent or relieve joint injury or pain since the tape can offer the support and stabilisation that the injured parts need. These tapes provide different levels of compression without side effects and can even hasten recovery after an injury.

Typically, strapping tapes are used for the following purposes:

  • Providing support and stabilising after acute injury to facilitate the healing process
  • Relieving chronic pain
  • Hastening the recovery process by compressing affected tissues
  • Preventing injury
  • Reducing chances of recurring injury

There are different types of tapes that can be used for different purposes, such as the following:

  • Rigid strapping tape. This is also known as athletic tape or sports tape. This is used to reduce your range of movement, support injured joints, or align joints or structures.
  • Elastic strapping tape. This is often used to rehabilitate, align, reduce range of movement, relieve pain, or support injured structures in cases that require less rigidity.
  • Kinesiology tape. This tape is almost similar to elastic sports tape with its function solely focused on assisting muscle function.

Depending on what injury you have sustained, your physiotherapist will determine what type of tape will be used and where it will be used. Some common examples of taping would be the use of rigid tape for ankle strapping to limit its range of movement after an injury or the combination of elastic and rigid tape for shoulder taping. Kinesio taping, for instance, can be used for calf taping to remove more weight from an injured structure.

Aside from the shoulders and ankles, strapping tapes are used on the knees, back, hand, and wrist. Some are also used on fingers and elbows.

Before applying the tape, the skin in the area to be taped has to be prepared. It should be shaved, at least 12 hours before the taping starts. The said area should be cleaned using a tape remover or body oil. Broken skin or rashes must be covered with a non-stick wound pad before putting on the tape. For tape-sensitive skin, an underwrap is best applied to the area to be taped. Make sure to follow manufacturer’s instructions in using the tape.

During the taping process, the tape should be tight enough for it to work as it was designed to work. Flex your muscles to get the proper muscle tension when you’re about to apply the tape. But don’t make it too tight that it would cut off blood supply, to the extent that the skin color in the area won’t return to normal after releasing it. Make sure it’s not too loose either or all your taping effort will go to waste as it won’t provide proper joint support. If you feel tingles or numbness in the taped area, remove it and readjust its tightness.

While the process might seem simple, the taping is best done by a physiotherapist. If you’ve gone to one to have your injury treated, make sure to observe their proper taping technique.
